Arrested to Arrested Development: 118 - Missing Kitty
"That's the seventh nipple I've seen today."
What a great episode to power through with tons of memorable moments to flash its audience with. This episode reminds us that this show is filled with gags that are running for a reason. It's genius really, how the writers know that audiences will see things that if they're memorable enough, the audience will pick up those things once they're addressed again or continued in later episodes. But it is the die-hard fans who notice the small, intricate details that aren't necessarily in the spotlight and will reappear numerous times throughout. This pattern would later be repeated and more often than you might believe, hence why this show requires and demands multiple viewings but alas, I am ranting and let me get through the highlights that all go hand in hand with one another.
First, are the simultaneous events that will obviously come into play and be interwoven with later plot points:
- Lindsay takes Maeby on a mother-daughter excursion to track down "Nana" to attempt to claim their funds from her, taking 90 minutes to realize the old lady living in Nana's old house was in fact, not Nana.
Lindsay: "Go! Go! It’s not her. Drop the photo album. We’re not in the photo album."
Maeby: "Drop the pie!"
- Michael curious as to the whereabouts of Nana's funds (and Nana) learns that the real Nana had died six months earlier with nobody in the family being notified.
- Kitty returns from the office after a hiatus but plans on leaving for spring break and a possible slip in the popular "Girls with Low Self Esteem" videos.
- Tobias' videos however, were not so popular.
- Uncle Gob, attempting to find Kitty since she "knows too much" after his affairs with her...
He’s my brother and he’s never even said “good job.” I just want him to love me, you know?
- ...mentors the young George Michael in magic, training him to become a great magician to create wonders for the girls with low self esteem on Spring break.
- Gob attempts to make the family yacht disappear by sinking it, revealing Lucille's lie "Nana was on that yacht!"
- In a final revelation, Lucille admits she knew about Nana's death but in a selfish act, claimed the money for herself and then deposited the cash in a college fund for Annyong.
Michael: [to Lucille and GOB] "Gee, I don't know what's more offensive - the fact that you didn't tell us about our grandmother's death or the fact that you sunk a $700,000 yacht!"
Gob: "I had $900,000 worth of insurance put on it."
And so with a final magic act, the family once again goes back to deceiving one another.
But let us note the highlight of the episode, once again following the non-related mishaps of Tobias Funke attempting to learn from his imprisoned surroundings...
